The Reading Woman’s Survival Kit: 10 Essentials for Making Time to Read
Being a woman who loves to read can sometimes look like trying to finish a chapter while your inbox explodes, your group chat is popping, and your husband can’t find the ketchup (spoiler: it’s in the fridge, where it always is). Making time to read is just hard!
You have always loved the beauty of books. You crave a quiet corner, your hands wrapped around a hot drink, and some uninterrupted time with a story that actually has a plot (and maybe spice? no judgment…). But between work, laundry, family, life admin, and whatever fresh chaos today brings, reading starts to feel like a guilty pleasure you need to earn — instead of the life-giving habit it actually is.
That’s why every book-loving woman who wants help making time to read needs a Reading Survival Kit — a blend of mindset shifts, practical reading strategies, and a little bit of sparkle. Whether you’re in a full-on reading slump or just trying to keep your TBR from becoming a graveyard of good intentions, this guide will help you make space for stories — without shame, stress, or spreadsheets.

What Is a Reading Survival Kit?
It’s not a physical box (though honestly… trademark that idea), but more like a life strategy. A personal go-to list of reading hacks and permission slips that help you stay connected to books — even if the only quiet time you get is when you’re pretending to fold laundry so no one talks to you.
1. A Mindset Shift: Guilt-Free Reading
Reading isn’t something you have to earn by checking off your entire to-do list. It’s not a luxury — it’s a lifeline. Making time to read is actually something that will help you get more done!
Reading is rest. It’s joy. It’s a part of who you are, and you deserve it — even when dinner dishes are still in the sink and the laundry pile looks personally offended.
Books aren’t just entertainment; they’re escape hatches when life feels heavy, fresh perspectives when you’re stuck, and sometimes even the soft place you need to land.
So here’s your reminder: you are allowed to make time for reading as a mom, no guilt required.

2. A Monthly TBR Reset
Take a look at my recent blog post explaining my whole process! Basically, I go through my TBR once a month (ish… ok maybe every other month?) and I only leave books on that I’m excited to read and that feel right at the time.
And that blog post? There’s a free TBR reset challenge there for you, called The TBR Intervention
3. A Designated Reading Routine
You don’t need a two-hour block of silence with candles lit. A consistent (ideally daily) 10-minute window — during your morning coffee, post-kiddos’ bedtime, or even waiting in the carpool line — can keep your reading momentum alive.
4. A Book-To-Go System
Busy women read in the margins (even if they don’t have time to annotate there). Reading women are resourceful. Keep a paperback in your purse, an eBook on your phone, and an audiobook synced in your car or earbuds. Suddenly, traffic jams and waiting rooms become your own personal book nook.

5. Audiobooks: Mom’s Multitasking Superpower
If you’re folding laundry, doing dishes, or overhearing your partner talk to his buddy about their golf game… you could also be reading. Making time to read sometimes looks like a time audit, and any time you’re using your hands but don’t need your ears…
That’s audiobook time, baby!
6. A No-Guilt DNF Rule
If a book is boring, weirdly sexist, or just not the one for you, DNF* it.
*DNF = Did Not Finish = Divine Necessary Freedom.
When you DNF a book, you’re not quitting, you’re curating. You do not have to finish a book that is boring you to tears or pissing you off!

7. A Cozy Reading Corner (Even if It’s Temporary)
You don’t need a Pinterest-worthy library wall to have a cozy reading corner (in fact, you probably have all of these things already).
Essential Cozy Reading Corner Ingredients:
- throw blanket (or two) and some comfy pillows
- decent lamp (being able to see what you’re reading is a MUST)
- a spot on the couch (or chair, or ottoman, or bed)
Bam! You instantly have a cozy reading corner.
Sure, there are a ton of fancy things you can buy for your cozy reading space, but before I link fun things for you, I want to remind you. Fancy isn’t necessary! I think comfort wins out over fanciness every time. However, these things are all HIGH on my “book nook wishlist”
8. A “Bookish Brain Dump”
We’ve all blanked the second we finally sit down with a book we haven’t read in a few days. Keep a running list of reminders on your Notes app or write book status updates in your Fable App (my current reading tracker of choice).
Either way, taking notes as you read, or after a reading session, will help you jog your memory!

9. A Reading Buddy or Book Club that gets you
Reading doesn’t have to be done solo. In fact, I highly encourage you to make it a group effort!
An in-person book club is my current way that I get built-in accountability and connection. My group is called “Shelfcare” and we are not about shaming people who didn’t read. We meet once a month at a local brewery, discuss the book for like 30 minutes, and at the end of catching up with each other, we pick next month’s book, time and location to meet.
Don’t have any local book clubs you’re interested in, or every reader friend lives far away? Start a group book chat or a low-key monthly Zoom call with your fellow exhausted-but-determined reader friends.
Joining forces with fellow readers can seriously breathe life back into your reading habit.
10. A Backup Plan for the Brain-Fried Days
Some days will be a mess. That’s okay.
Keep a backup read on hand: something light, short or visual. You could pick a fave comfort read, a short story collection, or a graphic novel.

Final Thoughts: Your Reading Survival Kit = Your Rules
You don’t need more hours in the day — just a reading system that fits into your crazy schedule. Whether you’re in a slump or just have a scattered brain (same), your next book is waiting…
🎧 In your earbuds.
